ALBERT LEA

The Albert Lea branch started the year with a very successful Tour of Homes that included five homes. We raised enough money to give four $1,000 scholarships for young college women and to also give $1,000 to EF.

Our September meeting was a program presented by Albert Lea’s mayor, Randy Erdman, on how women could participate in city government. In October we learned about Nepal from Earl and Bev Thompson of Clarks Grove. As a doctor and nurse, they have helped the people of Nepal in a variety of ways. They started a literacy program for women as well as a basic health program, which helped the women of Nepal gain some power and helped prevent the marriage of young girls to older men. The November program was presented by local attorney Kara Obermeyer, who spoke on “What’s New in Immigration in Albert Lea.”

At the February brunch, Pat Sween and Dave Kirkwood informed the group of the progress of pay equity for women, including a bill that has been signed by President Obama.

May brings us to the study of the “Blue Zone.” Own chapter member, Rosalie Truax, will be presenting information on this. All of us need to improve our lifestyle for healthy living. In June we are looking forward to a road trip into Iowa for fun, lunch, and shopping.

It was an interesting and productive year for the Albert Lea branch. Our future goals will be to increase membership and continue to provide vital program topics.
