Best
of the Branches - Moorhead Branch
“Education as the Gateway to
Women’s Economic Security” is the programmatic theme for the Moorhead/Fargo
branch during 2005-2006. Presenters expanded our knowledge of Women and Social
Security, Women in the Military, and Challenging Discrimination against Fat
Women and Exposing the Myths that Fuel It. Other interesting programs focused on
the Peace Corps as it empowers women across the globe, the spectrum of autism
disorders, and Feminist scholarship on pornography and prostitution.
In December, the branch
meeting was held at a local retirement home, which provided a dessert and
beverage. Other programs featured a talk on “My Life as a Minority in Iraq” by a
branch member, a video from the Legal Advocacy Fund about Vicky Dugan’s case,
and a potluck with a tour at a nonprofit’s facility.
The College: It Can Work
for You workshop will again take place at North High School in late April.
This workshop is directed at women who would normally not consider attending
college or going back to finish college if their education has been interrupted.
Experts from the five local colleges provide information about costs, child
care, counseling services, advisors, and the like.
Our across-the-border branch
has two book clubs, one on the Fargo side and one for Moorhead members. The
final session of the Moorhead Literature Group will be a poetry session, with
all asked to read “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost and each person bringing
a special poem or two to share.
