OWATONNA
The
mission of AAUW plays a major role in the Owatonna branch’s programs, which
this year included Women in the Outdoors, WomenInc,
and Women in High Places. We also celebrated Black History Month with a speaker
detailing his family’s journey in the South. The programs all touched on
equity in some form. Women in the Outdoors is an organization that provides
opportunities for women to become comfortable and familiar with aspects of the
outdoors that have typically been male dominated. WomenInc is a magazine run by women and written for a female
audience, providing readers opportunities to network. It features stories that
inspire and empower women. Kay Sauck, the president and editor of WomenInc,
presented the program about the magazine, and was very impressive. For Women’s
History Month, we hosted Catherine Allan, senior executive producer at Twin
Cities Public Television. This program is co-sponsored with three other groups
and the Owatonna Arts Center, which allows us to invite the public and create
more publicity.
Each year our branch is
able to fund a $500 scholarship for a college woman and a $300 campership for a
middle school girl. We also give a major portion of our fundraising dollars to
EF and LAF. At budget time, we have a formula that calculates the amount we need
for EF and LAF and the remainder goes to programming.
Our current visibility
chair, Melanie Nelson, is wonderfully capable at promoting our branch through
feature articles relating to our programs. We also create visibility through
advertising for scholarships. We have had a wonderful year so far with many
dedicated members doing more than their share to enable our branch to be
successful. We are very happy to be able to host the State Convention. This
opportunity has been a two-year journey for member Kay Oberle and I couldn’t
ask for a more capable and detailed person to coordinate this huge undertaking.
She is a true asset to our group.
If you are in Owatonna
anytime after the State Convention please look us up and join us for a program.
